paper pulp by design an mor transforms waste into furniture
Addressing the issue of industry paper waste, Design An Mor recycle organic waste to develop adaptable, inclusive and versatile modular furniture. The new project titled Paper Clay explores the physical and aesthetic properties of paper, transforming it into rigid blocks of composite ‘clay’. Injected with locally sourced natural mineral coloring, the surface of the new material lends a delicate marble effect, unique to each block. Blocks are put together to form a collection of modules the tablesshelves, chairs and stools that bring distinct design and added flexibility to offices and home spaces.

Through continuous exploration of the physical and aesthetic properties of waste paper, Design An Mor’s research has opened up new innovative applications for the material, such as interior and design products. With their new Paper Clay series, the team works with local partners to classify, shred and transform waste paper into a new fibrous material ‘clay’, its rigid properties and the aesthetics of marble presenting a unique building material for furniture design. Using locally available minerals and metal oxides, the project brings together these scraps of paper with natural materials, giving the surface of the clay a colorful marbled effect. The waste is made into small bricks of paper clay and assembled to make modular furniture items, including tables, chairs and shelves, mainly for offices and homes.
Due to the variety and complexity of paper scraps, organic waste bears remnants of pre-recycling styles and treatments, imparting a unique color, composition and structure to each piece in the Paper Clay collection. “The entire production process is designed as a cycle, from waste paper to raw materials, from raw materials to finished products. Until every piece of material that is no longer needed is ground down and turned into a finished product,” remarks Design An Mor.
