There are so many big and important decisions to make when expecting a new baby – from choosing the baby’s name to choosing which pediatrician’s office you will use. Some of the most fun decisions for parents-to-be are planning nursery and signing up for baby gear. From furniture and equipment to baby essentials, many of today’s baby items are designed to grow with your child from toddlerhood through kindergarten and beyond.
There are a few staples that most parents buy when furnishing a nursery.
“You have a crib, a low dresser for storage, which can double as a changing area by adding a changing try and changing mat, and then a comfy place to sit like a glider or a rocks when you keep those unusual hours when baby needs you,” says Dave Brodsky, owner of Bergs Baby and Teen Furniture in Lyndhurst.
Brodsky adds that many cribs convert to toddler beds and full beds, so parents are shopping with the long term in mind.
“Most of our customers are looking for quality in hopes of keeping this furniture well beyond the baby and toddler years,” says Brodsky.
Trends for 2022 baby and kids bedrooms reflect the latest interior design styles – modern rustic, farmhouse and minimalist top the list.
When it comes to colors, shades of white and gray have dominated the market for several years, but Brodsky says warm tones are increasingly in demand.
With supply chain shortages, plan to order custom furniture as soon as possible to have the best chance of receiving everything before baby arrives.
When it comes to big-ticket items, such as bassinets, strollers and car seats, parents want quality and convenience.
The American Academy of Pediatrics “recommends that parents sleep in the same room – but not in the same bed as a baby, preferably for at least the first six months”, meaning that a good quality crib is essential for a peaceful night’s sleep.
One of the most popular bassinets on the market is the Halo BassiNest Swivel Sleeper. This bassinet comes standard with a 360 degree swivel, adjustable height, breathable material and a lowered side wall for quick access to baby without bending over. It is also available in different colors and additional features such as a night light, music and vibration.
The Halo brand also makes newborn sleeping bags and swaddles, and their products are used in many hospitals across the United States, according to their website.
There’s a lot to consider when it comes to choosing a stroller and car seat and there’s a wide range of options and price ranges on the market.
Baby stroller and gear maker Uppababy is a top choice for parents and it’s not hard to see why. The brand’s popular Vista stroller can convert from a single stroller to a double stroller, has multi-position seats, and you can add a backpack board for older kids.
“The versatility of having a stroller that can accommodate your family and their growing needs has become a priority for most of our customers,” adds Brodsky. He says Uppababy is one of the best sellers in his store.
Uppababy also offers its own range of car seats and manufactures accessories so that other brands of car seats are compatible with their strollers.
Number one on this mom’s list is the Kyte BABY sleeping bag, according to Kate Horne, owner of Babycakes Children’s Boutique in Rocky River and mother of three.
“When people walk into the store, it’s the first thing we take them to,” she says.
These buttery soft portable blankets are made from bamboo and help regulate baby’s temperature at night.
“There’s also a baby blanket and a toddler blanket, so the great thing is when they get out of the sleeping bag, you can get them a blanket for their crib or first bed,” adds Horne.
Other top picks in the store are Zutano Booties (they actually stay on your wriggling baby’s feet), Dishwasher Safe Silicone Ties and Bibs, and Pearl Copper Bibs.
If you can’t resist those cute little baby outfits, Babycakes has several adorable brands of baby and kids’ clothing and even offers embroidery for a personal touch.
