Tobias Franz and his team at Innauer-Matt Architekten’s new Engelbach Kindergarten in Lustenau is a unique and incomparable world for children that has emerged on its site between the Grindel Canal and Hasenfeldstrasse.
The simple and straightforward design has resulted in a place with an intimate feel that is characterized by an aura of great relaxation.
The new kindergarten combines the potential of the place with the requirements of modern pedagogy.
The outdoor space plays an important role here.
Accordingly, the new kindergarten is located away from the street and thus creates space for a high-quality, openly designed space that can be used by the public.
The maximized outdoor space with the children’s play area and the public playground is oriented towards the Grindel Canal and offers children and local residents a high quality adventure space in the countryside.
The new building is designed as a compact two-storey structure, which hides a multi-level inner world.
Opening to the interior and exterior, generous access and communication areas.
All the spaces of the house are connected by three staircases and the traffic flows of children, dense at peak times, are unbundled.
Upstairs, at the “Belletage”, the group rooms are also on one level.
The five units with movement space and communication areas function as independent areas within the building.
All groups are consistently oriented to the southeast, ensuring optimal exposure and tanning during core kindergarten hours in the morning.
Weather-protected play decks expand the functionality of the rooms at the back, creating a pleasant transitional space and conveying a strong relationship with the surrounding high-quality outdoor play area.
The simple and straightforward layout of the new kindergarten facilitates orientation and thus forms the ideal conditions for a communicative learning and play landscape.
The exterior and interior appearance is characterized by a delicate architectural language which, in its scale, finds patterns in the special use.
Natural local wood and metal framed windows characterize the simple yet atmospheric semantics of the house.
The material concept in the interior creates an ambience appropriate for use but remains reserved.
Solid wooden surfaces, mineral materials and carefully coordinated colors enrich the room with a pleasant look and feel and give children and educators enough freedom to develop.
The building was built as a mixed construction of wood and concrete, which can meet today’s energy and ecological requirements, especially in terms of sustainability.
A basic structure of stiffening core walls is complemented by prefabricated wooden wall and ceiling elements.
The use of high-quality, environmentally friendly and locally available materials, energy-efficient building technology systems and the use of renewable energies protect nature and the environment, making a positive contribution to sustainability.
