“The store was an accident…sort of,” says Zane Curwen-Walker.
He talks about his one-man operation Ours, which you’ll find behind a striking cobalt brick facade on Fitzroy’s Johnston Street. The chic new art and design showcase champions local creators and includes gallery space as well as an Airbnb upstairs.
After successfully running an Airbnb in Hepburn Springs – and dabbling in furniture making – Curwen-Walker has cultivated a number of connections within Melbourne’s creative industry. “Every time you go through Instagram you see these beautifully curated rooms… I wanted to open another Airbnb [in Melbourne] which could feature all that stuff from local furniture makers, designers and artists.
Large format access members get special tables at busy restaurants, tickets to exclusive events, and discounts on food, coffee, branded deals and more.
The downstairs store and gallery is full of vibrant and eye-catching pieces from Australian brands. You might find designer furniture from Billy and World, quirky bespoke homewares courtesy of Objects by Kit, a number of colorful curated items from Brunswick’s Pogo Store, and much more.
Upstairs, the sunny one-bedroom apartment is the stuff that inner north interior design dreams are made of. It’s a cozy space, but it’s filled with pieces from some of the same artists and designers featured downstairs, and it’s also defined by exposed brick and concrete and rustic wood floors. “It’s evolving,” Curwen-Walker says, but it’s about “being shameless [wares from] our own backyard.
The apartment can also be booked for photo shoots or small-scale events.
